Abstract Expressions: Continuing the 2010 Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE will feature Rhode Island artist, T.M. Dyer, who will give an informal gallery talk on how he conceives and executes his unique trompe l'oeil abstract pen & ink work from 5:00 until 8:00 in the evening of March 11th. Basically self-taught, his work invites the eye to see a two-dimensional plane transformed into a three-dimensional one. In addition, Mr. Dyer, one of the featured artist's in CADEAUX du MONDE's Galerie Escalier, will showcase a selection of his unique pen & ink abstracts including his most recent work--Hardened Heart. Hearts in February: Kicking off the 2010 Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE will feature Newport artist, Greta Kessler, who will return once again this year for an artist's demonstration and workshop on "How to Make Valentines or Greeting Cards using Papercutting, Origami and Other Techniques" from 5:00 until 8:00 in the evening of February 11th. The annual Valentine's special by Greta Kessler in 2010 also features Ms. Kessler's original cards designed with unusual papers and individual messages highlighted with papercuts and origami. In addition, Ms. Kessler will be showcase a selection of her unique heart jewelry featuring swarovski crystals and hand blown glass. An Exploration of Nativities Finishing the 2009 Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE will feature ongoing informal gallery talks from 5:00 until 8:00 in the evening of December 10th exploring the diversity of inculturated creches and nativities from around the world focusing on the wide variety of materials used as well as the differences in the depiction of these iconic figures. Folk art inculturated creches not only represent the artist's concept of the birth of Jesus Christ, but also bring ownership to this monumental event. Expressed in these creches is the universality of the theme which lends itself to each individual culture. These gallery talks will be illustrated with CADEAUX du MONDE's current collection of fairly traded folk art nativities from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. An Exploration of Textiles Starting off theFall Newport Gallery Night Series, CADEAUX du MONDE's owner Katie Dyer will be presenting ongoing informal gallery talks from 5:00 until 8:00 in the evening of October 8th exploring such diverse textile traditions as reverse applique from Thailand, Ikat dying and weaving in Guatemala and Indonesia, strip weaving in West Africa, embroidery including kantha from Bangladesh, cross-stitch from Thailand, and mirror embroidery from India and dying techniques such as tie dye and batik. These gallery talks will be illustrated with CADEAUX du MONDE's current collection of fairly traded folk art textiles from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. October 1, 2009 Dear Friends of CADEAUX du MONDE: CADEAUX du MONDE would like to invited all of our family, friends, business associates and customers to consider a donation to our 2009 UNICEF Fundraising Campaign--our 23rd year of coordinating a UNICEF benefit. UNICEF is hard at work in over 150 countries around the world with a single mission: to do whatever it takes to save the lives of children. UNICEF is on the ground with permanent staff in every one of these countries, providing lifesaving health care clean water, improved nutrition, education and relief in times of emergency. UNICEF's innovative, low-cost but extremely effective solutions to the problems facing children have allowed UNICEF to save more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization. Several local businesses have once again generously donated their space and placed the familiar bright orange countertop collection boxes next to their cash registers for the entire month of October--National UNICEF month.
