CADEAUX du MONDE owner Katie Dyer will be presenting ongoing informal lectures from 5 until 8 during the evening of April 10th, Newport's monthly Gallery Night. She will illustrate these informal lectures with CADEAUX du MONDE's current collection of modern Guatemalan textiles comparing them with antique Mayan pieces. Woven into these pieces are various weaving techniques; for example, ikat, a tie-dying and weaving technique, supplementary weft weaving, and shadow weaving which tell the stories of the art, history and traditions of the Mayans of Guatemala. An added feature is the opportunity to weave on a backstrap loom which is used by the Mayan lady weavers who live in Guatemala. These ladies are considered the finest weavers in the world because of their mastery of these intricate and varied techniques.
Located in Newport at 26 Mary Street, CADEAUX du MONDE's main gallery features fairly traded international folk art and Galerie Escalier, the former servants' staircase, showcases local artists' works on a rotating basis. For further information and directions to the gallery, contact the staff of CADEAUX du MONDE at 848-0550.

CADEAUX DU MONDE WITH QUILTING DEMONSTRATIONS

Newporter Anne Bernardi opens her first one-woman quilt show, “Quilted Creations” at CADEAUX du MONDE’s Galerie Escalier on Thursday evening, October 11th.  The opening reception, with the artist’s informal quilt deomnstrations will be held during Newport Gallery Night from 5 until 8 in the evening at the Gallery location, 26 Mary Street in Newport.  The show will continue through November 6th and can be seen daily from 10 until 6 at the Gallery.
Bernardi, a self-taught seamstress and fabric artist, worked in fabric, making clothing for herself and her daughters for many years and graduated very early in her sewing career to the decorative sewing art forms of cross-stitching and needlepoint.  Her interest in quilting started in 2000 while helping her daughter, Julie, piece a quilt.  After purchasing and completing her first quilt kit, she progressed to coordinating her quilts, tablerunners and  wallhangings using her own choice of fabrics, colors and designs.  Her old Singer Sewing Machine was soon replaced with a new one, and she joined the Crystal Coasts Quilter’s Guild in North Carolina, where she lived.  Her first Quilt Show netted her a first Honorable Mention Ribbon.  Her quilts are presently hanging in collections all over the country and adorn the walls of The Melville House Inn on Clarke Street in Newport.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Bernardi graduated from Long Beach High School and entered the paid work force as an insurance secretary. She married, became a homemaker, raising her two daughters and working in retail at Belk’s, a large department store chain in North Carolina.  A recent transplant to Rhode Island, she relocated to be near her daughter and family while her son-in-law, a Naval Officer, was stationed in Newport.
